How to track a nutrient your app doesn't have a field for
Folate, iodine, choline, omega-3, magnesium — the nutrients people are told to watch are rarely the nutrients trackers expose. AIM lets you add the one you care about and set a goal on it.
There is a familiar moment with food trackers. A doctor, a dietitian or a lab result names a specific nutrient — folate before pregnancy, iron after a low ferritin reading, iodine on a plant-based diet, potassium for blood pressure — and you open your tracking app to follow it and find it simply is not there.
You get calories. You get protein, carbs and fat. If you are lucky you get fiber and sodium. The nutrient you were actually told to watch is not a field.
Why the field is missing
Macro trackers are built around a scoring loop: a daily calorie target, three macro rings, a streak. Every nutrient outside that loop is a database column with no screen attached to it. Adding one means adding a goal type, a chart, a place on the meal card and a spot in settings — so most apps stop at the ones almost everyone wants.
That is a reasonable product decision and a bad outcome for the person who was handed a specific number to hit.
The registry approach
AIM is built the other way around. There is one nutrient registry, and everything downstream — the extraction schema the AI fills in, the meal card, the metric picker, the charts, the goals — is generated from it. A nutrient is not a special case, it is a row.
Fourteen ship as standard: calories, protein, carbs, fat, fiber, sugar, saturated fat, sodium, cholesterol, potassium, calcium, iron, vitamin C and water.
Beyond those, you add your own. A custom metric needs three things:
- 1.A name — "Folate", "Omega-3", "Iodine", "Added sugar".
- 2.A unit — µg, mg, g, ml. The unit is yours; AIM reports in it.
- 3.A goal or a cap — a daily or weekly number, and which direction it runs in.
From then on it is estimated on every meal alongside everything else, it gets a color, it can be pinned to your meal cards, and it appears in the week chart.
Pin five, record all of them
The thing that makes this survivable is that tracking a nutrient and seeing a nutrient are separate decisions.
Every nutrient you have added is recorded on every meal. But your meal card shows only the handful you pinned — five or so, whatever you are actually watching this month. The rest sit behind "more", still recorded, still chartable, still there when you want to look.
So adding folate does not turn your lunch into a spreadsheet. It adds one line to a chart you check on Sunday.
Be honest about the error bars
A photograph plus a description is a good estimate of portion and composition. It is a better estimate of calories and protein than of micronutrients, because micronutrient content varies with soil, cultivar, storage time and cooking method in ways no image contains.
For folate specifically: fortified grains carry a label number that is reliable, and AIM will use it if you say the food was fortified. Leafy greens vary by a factor of two depending on freshness. Treat the trend across a week as meaningful and any single day as approximate.
That caveat is not unique to AIM. It applies to every food database ever built, including the ones that print a number to three decimal places without mentioning it.
When a cap is the right tool
Not everything you track is something you want more of.
Sodium, added sugar, saturated fat, cholesterol, alcohol, caffeine — these are ceilings. AIM marks them as such: the bar fills toward a limit instead of toward a target, and it turns to a warning color when you go over rather than celebrating. See Caps, not goals for how to set one up.
The distinction sounds small. It is the difference between an app that congratulates you for hitting 3,400 mg of sodium and one that tells you.

- Can I track folic acid in a macro tracker?
- In most macro trackers, no — they expose calories and the three macros and little else. AIM lets you add any nutrient as a custom metric with its own unit and daily or weekly goal, folate included.
- What is the difference between a goal and a cap?
- A goal is a number to reach — protein, fiber, vitamin C. A cap is a number to stay under — sodium, added sugar, saturated fat. AIM treats them differently: a cap turns the bar to a warning color when you pass it rather than congratulating you.
